The original pedestrian handrail

From the bridge to your hands

The steel used in our work was installed on the Golden Gate Bridge during its construction and served as part of the original pedestrian handrail. It was milled by Bethlehem Steel Company in Pennsylvania and remained on the bridge until the handrail was replaced in 1993.

This historic steel has been preserved and transformed in San Francisco. Natural variations in texture, finish, and markings reflect its history, making every piece unique.

The original handrail was installed when the Golden Gate Bridge opened.

For more than half a century, the steel lined the pedestrian walkway above San Francisco Bay.

1993

The handrail was removed during replacement and the historic steel was preserved.

Historic material. Individual craftsmanship.

Every piece begins with authentic bridge steel and is individually cut, cleaned, sandblasted, finished, and inspected in our San Francisco metal studio.

Some pieces preserve the aged character of the steel. Others are finished in International Orange, the unmistakable color associated with the bridge.
